Speed Limiter Calibration for Supported Applications

Speed-limiter assessment for supported, legally permitted closed-course, competition, industrial or specialist applications.

A vehicle speed limit may be controlled by the engine ECU, TCU, body or fleet system, tyre and gearing configuration, legal coding or several controllers together. The exact architecture must be identified before any request is assessed.

Information required

  • Vehicle or machine, engine, transmission and controller identification.
  • Original ECU/TCU file and HW/SW.
  • Current configured limit and the observed behaviour.
  • Tyre size, gearing and any hardware changes that affect calculated speed.
  • Country, vehicle category and precise intended use.
  • Closed-course, competition, industrial or other permitted context where applicable.

Safety and legal boundary

Speed limiters can be legally required for particular vehicle categories and markets. Changing or removing them can be prohibited and can affect safety, braking, tyres, driveline, inspection, registration and insurance. BLAG only assesses supported and legally permitted applications. The customer must not misrepresent road use as export or closed-course use.

Architecture

Determine which controller or system actually enforces the limit.

Vehicle capability

Tyres, brakes, cooling, gearing and driveline must suit any permitted objective.

Accurate use

Declare jurisdiction, category and application before work begins.

Controlled validation

Test only in a safe, legal environment appropriate to the application.

Not every request should proceed

BLAG can decline a request that lacks correct identification, has an unsafe mechanical context, conflicts with legal requirements or cannot be validated appropriately. Software availability is not the same as permission to use it.

Confirm the controlling system and test safely

Before writing, establish whether the observed limit is software, coding, fleet configuration, gearing, tyre scaling, transmission logic or a mechanical performance boundary. After any permitted change, scan all relevant controllers and verify indicated and measured speed using an appropriate controlled method. Confirm tyres, brakes, temperatures and driveline behaviour remain within their approved capability. Public-road testing must follow applicable law. A higher requested value is never, by itself, evidence that the vehicle or application can operate safely at that speed.
